10 Steps to Change Your Name–Without Taking a Personal Day

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:42 pm by E

Switching over all your stuff from your old to your new name can be intimidating. Get at least 3 originals of your marriage certificate (license) at the courthouse to use for the whole process, or whatever it is that initiated the change.

The trick is to do it one thing at a time but in the right order, or you may find yourself back-tracking. Here’s the order that worked best for me:

1. Social Security #.  Has to be first.

2. Work Info

3. Driver’s License

4. Bank Account

5. Insurance (Car & Health…& Dental I suppose)

6. Credit cards

7. Frequent Flier Accounts (Takes a personal letter and a copy of your marriage license mailed to their headquarters.)

Note: I traveled with my old name and used my passport until all my frequent flier numbers were changed over–that way I could still collect miles.

8. Passport

9. Your name’s appearance within your email account(s)

10. Online accounts like Amazon.com

That’s it! (?) With 2 caveats:

Things that will eventually expire–like cell phone plans or magazine subscriptions–are things you can leave with your old name. Eventually they will phase themselves out.

Don’t forget to change those special things that are specific to you–alumni stuff/professional organizations/charity groups. Although you may want to leave some of those types of things in your old name so people don’t lose track of you.

Look at me, I can be Centerfield

Posted in My Thoughts at 12:22 am by E

This initial post is to commemorate Kirby Puckett–the former Minnesota Twin who died suddenly yesterday of a stroke. He was 45.

“I was told I would never make it because I’m too short. Well, I’m still too short, but I’ve got 10 All-Star games, two World Series championships, and I’m a very happy and contented guy. It doesn’t matter what your height is, it’s what’s in your heart.”

Surely we saw him at his best and also at his worst but I will throw Homer Hankies, not stones.
